Could Have Beens: These Actors Rejected Iconic Roles and Changed Movie History Forever
It’s almost impossible to think of Indiana Jones without conjuring up images of Harrison Ford in his sable fedora, or of Gladiator without Russell Crowe’s scruffy visage gazing out of his Roman helmet. Some roles seem to be made for their actors, and some actors seem to have been born to play a role. Surprisingly, some iconic roles we closely associate with the actors playing them were written with other actors in mind, or turned down by the stars they were intended for. What would Grease look like with the Fonz Playing Danny Zuko instead of John Travolta, or Michelle Pfeiffer playing Jodie Foster’s iconic Clarice in Silence of the Lambs? It’s certainly interesting to explore the “what-ifs” of cinematic history, and to try and imagine how films we’ve grown up watching would look and feel with different actors and actresses in the lead.
